Law and Society is one of the oldest and largest law programs in North America with over 30 years of history and approximately 1,000 students. The final year at Laurier will provide you with an enriched program that will allow you to successfully write the national certification examinations leading to a legal practice in Canada, or to embark on a rewarding career in a number of other areas related to law. I am in my first year in law and society. As the Major says, it all depends on how the law is applied to society. The first half is primarily focused on Indigenous peoples in Canada, and the other half is really about the sociology of law. The topic itself seems simple at some point, but you have to look at the topic from different angles, so it`s really not an easy major. This course examines the impact of legal institutions on justice in civil society. Topics studied include transformative/restorative justice, racism and racial profiling, moral regulation, nation-building, and the influence of different cultural legal traditions. In the first semester, students will become familiar with a range of scientists and non-scientists. Drawing from fields as diverse as philosophy, anthropology and criminology, you will focus on critical thinking, research and analysis. Gain a deeper understanding of the law, how it has influenced the course of history, and the role it plays in today`s society. Examine crucial issues such as the nature and origin of the right; legislation and violations of the law; rights and obligations; Freedom and responsibility. The Law and Society program has six prescribed categories. In addition, a student takes five support courses that take into account the student`s study objectives and can be tailored to their particular interests. Students consider the relationship between law, legal processes, human behavior, and legal and social institutions. The conventions of reading, reasoning, logic and program solving are used to study problems.
It`s a challenging program, and frankly, any bachelor`s degree at York will prepare you well for law school. Don`t waste your time and money unless you know for sure you`re going to get involved. Many people fail in the first year of the law course for this program. They would do better to study political science, sociology, philosophy or history. You`ll get the grades you need while developing the critical thinking skills for this program. As for York U, despite strikes every 3-4 years, it`s a good school if you want to become a lawyer. They are also likely to become Marxists, as many teachers are communists and apply ideology through what they teach. But if you can think for yourself, you`ll be fine and you`ll be able to think critically about what you`re being force-fed.
